International Environmental Processes in the spotlight of YSU Students: CBD COP17
Recently, Mari Chakryan, founder of the Public Awareness and Monitoring Center NGO and an expert in environmental governance and environmental information, met with second-year undergraduate students of the Archaeology and Ethnography program at the Faculty of History of Yerevan State University. She spoke about an important international event expected to take place in Armenia in the autumn of 2026.
Mari Chakryan presented the history of international environmental processes, discussed the three Rio Conventions, and introduced the Aarhus Convention—an international legal instrument that implements Principle 10 of the Rio Declaration on environmental democracy.
Together with the students, she discussed the obligations of the Parties to these conventions and the importance of their decisions in addressing the environmental challenges facing the planet.
The students also learned about the new agenda for biodiversity conservation, what makes the 17th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP17) unique, why it is being held in Armenia, and how they can contribute to and become part of this important international event.
The meeting was organized at the invitation of lecturer Ruzanna Tsaturyan, within the framework of the “Contemporary Anthropological Disciplines” course, under the topic of Environmental Anthropology.
